Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when pressure is put on the median nerve, which runs from the forearm to the palm of the hand through a small passageway, called the carpal tunnel. This passageway also contains tendons that bend the fingers, ligaments, and bone. The median nerve controls movement and feeling for the thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, and portions of the ring finger. It does not control movement or sensation of the pinky finger.

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include overuse or repeated hand and arm movements for prolonged periods of time. Some activities or reasons that may cause carpal tunnel syndrome include:
