Assessing & Treating Genital Herpes Online

Genital herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the Unites States. Most cases are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV – HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is more often the cause of cold sores or fever blisters on the face, but it can also be the cause of genital herpes. Most cases of HSV-2 will lead to genital herpes.

Most people with genital herpes do not know they have it because in most people, there are no symptoms. It is important to get tested because this virus is passed through sexual contact from one person to another. If you don’t know you have it, you don’t know you’re giving it!

In more serious cases, symptoms will start with small blisters that will eventually break open and produce raw, painful sores that scab and then after a few weeks will heal. If you do produce blisters, they could be accompanied by flu-like symptoms with a fever and swollen lymph nodes. Herpes can also cause itchiness, pain from urine, headaches, backaches and more.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for genital herpes, making it even more important to get tested and wear protection to hopefully avoid coming in contact with the disease.

You can talk to your online doctor and get advice about your genital herpes. If you have genital herpes or a STD, our doctors will refer you to your local PCP or a specialist for an in-person examination.

During a video consult on TelaCare, one of our board-certified doctors will ask you a series of targeted questions to determine the severity of your genital herpes. You will need to have an in-person examination, but our providers can help with diagnosis. Diagnosis will be based on duration, severity of symptoms and your medical history.

No matter what STD you may have, treatment will likely include the practice of safe sex to avoid spreading the disease to others. The surest way to avoid spreading and contracting STDs is to practice abstinence. This means not having vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

It is important for both you and your partner to get tested to know for sure that neither of you have genital herpes or any other STD. This is one of the most reliable ways to avoid STDs.

Getting an STD is not the end of the world. Many STDs are curable and all are treatable.

Note: some STDs require ongoing treatment and counseling. We can help you manage the condition if you have already been diagnosed.

Can an online dermatologist determine if a skin growth is cancerous?

If you have skin lesions that fit the ABCDE criteria, in that they are Asymmetric with jagged Borders, multiple Colors, a Diameter larger than a pencil, and have been Evolving (you have observed them change over time) -- then you will likely need a biopsy to test for melanoma.

The ABCDE algorithm is just one of many tests a trained dermatologist uses in assessing risk of skin lesions, if you are unsure about whether your lesion merits a biopsy an online dermatologist can quickly examine your skin and either exclude the possibility of it being malignant or tell you that you have sufficient risk factors to merit going in person for testing.
