Diagnosing & Treating ALS Online

ALS is a progressive disease meaning it worsens over time. The disease affects nerve cells that send messages from the brain to the spine to the muscles, also known as motor neurons. As these nerves deteriorate, the muscles begin to weaken until they no longer function.

There are two predominant forms of the disease, sporadic ALS and familial ALS. Sporadic ALS, which is the more common form of the condition, can affect anyone, while Familial ALS refers to cases in which the disease is inherited.

Although it’s unclear what causes ALS, current possible causes include gene mutation, chemical imbalance, disorganized immune response, and protein mishandling. Complications of the disease include breathing problems, speaking problems, difficulty eating, and dementia.

During a video consult on TelaCare your doctor will ask you a series of targeted questions to determine if your symptoms point to ALS. Then your provider will proceed to determine the best treatment plan for you. Your provider may recommend in-person examination by a specialist if this is needed. Your treatment plan is based on the duration and severity of your symptoms and your medical history.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will go over the risks and benefits of the various treatment plans. Treatment for ALS is different depending on the severity.

Options for treatment of ALS may include:

  • Riluzole
  • Edaravone
